Yasmine Aker Instagram – Hey America, we need to talk. The revolution in Iran is not just about Hijab. It’s not about Persecution of people who choose to wear hijab or Islam. The Islamic Republic of Iran only uses the name of Islam, but they do not actually care about Muslims. Many people who identify as Muslim in Iran are also against mandatory Hijab and against the institution of their theocratic dictatorship. As a society we need to make the distinction between Islam the religion and the institution of a government that has co-opted a religion in order to control people, hoard wealth and power, and finance terrorism globally. Here in the west most people can acknowledge the distinction between the church and the practitioners of the faith. For example we collectively can acknowledge the institution of the Catholic Church being complicit in some pretty negative things, and that most people who identify as catholics are not painted with that same brush. It is time we finally acknowledge the difference between Islam as a religion and the institution of Islam run by fundamentalist extremists in Iran who have hijacked the name of the religion to forcefully shut down any and all conversations about their crimes against humanity because it would immediately paint anyone who does into an Islamophobe.
