Was quite amused and cheered to see a supporter wearing a tee shirt that coincidentally said “Hammer Strength”. There were definitely examples of hammer strength amongst the residents we spoke to today. One was a working mum who had ended a long day at work and was in high spirits as she strove to put her active toddler to bed, in preparation for the school day tomorrow. Another was a caregiver who was taking care of an adult daughter with significant mental health challenges. The extent of invisible labour such as caregiving usually goes unrecognised, and we would go much farther as a society if we duly recognise and remunerate the hammer strength of women and men who uphold the stability and well being their families. Simei, Singapore Met inspiring and entrepreneurial Singaporeans at house visits in Simei last evening. Resident L decided to set up his own digital marketing consultancy after being an employee for a few years, and spoke about the need to keep ahead of the trends such as Tiktok in order to remain competitive. Resident H had refurbished his flat into a stunning minimalist abode and designed his new home to accommodate a side hustle and passion in the form of private dining, whilst juggling a demanding job as a trader. The Kampong spirit was also alive in the block, as we noted a bottom-up WhatsApp group chat that was organised for residents to stay connected. Big thanks to our regular volunteers for regularly walking the ground with us. Also a shoutout to WP member and former candidate Frieda Chan, who recently told me about her own startup Synergy Collective, which provides remote counselling and therapy to GP referrals. It’s a worthwhile initiative, and thank you for the nifty tote bag! Met inspiring and entrepreneurial Singaporeans at house visits in Simei last evening. Tuesday, 22 November, 9pm. Don’t miss it! Feel free to DM me or type your questions in the comments! #tehtarikwithwalid #singaporepolitics Back at Simei with @fooseckguan.sg and @abdulshariff.sg for our house visits this week. Resident T introduced us to her two beautiful daughters, one of whom was named Rebekah, my middle name (albeit the non-biblical spelling). T made the pivot from being a salaried employee to being a business owner during covid, and set up an online pharmacy selling TCM herbs. She shared that she started this business with a passion to modernise TCM medication and allow people to have easy access to it via online selling platforms. I believe that when people embark on a passion project with a strong personal motivation that aligns nicely with their ethos and values, work will feel less like work, and there will be greater meaning in knowing that you are doing something to leave the world in a better place. Separately she also shared that her husband runs a tuition business that only accepts students with low marks, because they want to ensure that students with academic challenges are given more of a fighting chance to turn around their scores. She also offered tuition slots to our food distribution recipients if the need arises. Very grateful for her generosity and kind gesture. It was an uplifting conversation and one that left the volunteers and myself inspired. I will be away for the next two weeks so won’t be able to join on outreach activities. Thankful to Kenneth, Shariff and our dedicated team for holding the fort in the meantime. Simei, Singapore Back at Simei with @fooseckguan.sg and @abdulshariff.sg for our house visits this week. Simei, Singapore The rainy morning did not deter crowds at both 58 and 16 as people were still going about their marketing for the week. At 58, I noted the presence of multigenerational stalls that had been passed down from three generations in the family, such as the vegetarian food stall and some of the Muslim food stalls. Admittedly, I am less familiar with the offerings at 58 compared to @fooseckguan.sg , as he tends to get allocated to walk there more often while I am at the other markets. It was nice to tapow a helping of mee rebus and vegetarian noodles, which was a welcome treat at lunchtime. Stay warm and safe this weekend, all!
