Keahu Kahuanui Instagram – Watching us dedicate entire months every year to highlight marginalized Americans that desperately need to be uplifted, acknowledged, seen and heard yet allowing laws to be overturned or stalled which are critical to protecting the rights for everyone as truly equal citizens is devastating and painful to both behold and be affected by. It’s times like this that I feel I just want to throw my arms up and give up.

We claim to celebrate and honor the rights of women, LGBTQIA+, Black lives and history, Asian & Pacific Islanders’ heritage, people with disabilities except that when these groups come under attack, we are failing to protect and defend them. Lack of safety and opportunity to grow leads to us feeling insecure, suspicious, stressed and isolated. It affects our health, well being and ultimately our strength to continue to fight to make our voices heard.

The need to create change at every level has never been greater. I know many of you understand the importance of voting, protesting, speaking out, being present, educating and giving back. And you probably have seen the ways that I personally contribute to causes. Despite that, some days it feels like we’ve gone backwards by decades but know that you don’t have to go as far as biking 545 miles across California like I have to make just as big of an impact in as many peoples’ lives. It’s why I want to point to another important cause that can only succeed with more participation.

As an ambassador of the All of Us Research Program, I hope that you’ll consider joining the program. Aimed at building one of the most diverse health databases in history, we can help researchers include the needs, backgrounds and social determinants of health of EVERYONE in their efforts to treat and prevent diseases we face. The only way this can be done is with studies like this one that seeks to understand who we are, how we live and what we need. Some important causes don’t get as much fanfare as others but the potential impact of a resource like joinallofus.org/togetherkeahu can have is one that I feel promises to add equity to our lives over time in a significant way that deserves your attention.
