So…this is a picture that has never seen the light of day (outside of my school yearbook 😱). Meet high school freshman MatPat. Yes, those are braces. Yes, that is a gold necklace. Yes, that is an unshaven mustache and HEAVY unibrow. In middle school and early high school, I REFUSED to shave those off because I thought they made me unique. I thought grooming those things away was me being ASHAMED of who I was. But that’s not true. What I grew to understand was that what made me unique was on the inside, and no amount of shaving or personal grooming would take that away. And by taking care of my outside better, I could be stronger, more confident, and grow to love myself more without sacrificing my identity.
