Alexis Nikole Nelson Instagram – Happy #indigenouspeoplesday to all of the indigenous land and water protectors, culture and language preservers, colonization resisters, who exemplify what land stewardship could and should look like worldwide.
This weekend the @prairieislandindiancommunity hosted @linda.black.elk, Sam Thayer, @mnforager, and @foragerchef, and I. we got to partake in harvesting Wapato, Sagittaria latifolia (some of the elders grew up calling them Rat Potatoes after the muskrats that also enjoy them! And though i think I’m spelling it wrong, it’s Dakota name psį́n ćiŋćá or child of the rice is both botanically accurate as many were growing beneath stalks of wild rice AND IT IS JUST AN ADORABLE NAME 😭❤️)
The act of gathering and talking and laughing and getting muddy together was truly heart and mind medicine that I didn’t realize I needed. We aren’t built to forage and survive alone ❤️
