Jeslyn Gorman Instagram – #blacklivesmatter to me… and if you know me, they always have. But to America? You’d think by now black lives would matter, but the truth is, to so many non people of color (whether they’d like to admit it or not) they don’t matter. Or sadly, they just don’t care to ask themselves the question, and their privilege allows them to just brush off the topic and “keep it movin”. For those of you who think the current state of this country has nothing to do with you.. I encourage you to think about the words you speak, what you think when you see people of color, or the racism you see but don’t stop… this absolutely has to do with you. The question is, what are you going to do about it now?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been influenced by black culture… black music, black dance, black art, black fashion, black food… the list goes on. I wouldn’t have certain qualities in me today, if it weren’t for that influence. To be honest, my voice would sound a heck of a lot different. My best friends are black, my colleagues are black, so essentially, MY FAMILY is black. And if this is affecting my family, this no doubt affects me. I’m tired of seeing black people murdered and I won’t wait until it’s even more personal to be proactive. There’s never ever been a question about my solidarity.
