Floating on an autumn night over the sea just north of the Arctic Circle.
The only noise comes from the gentle wind hitting the life rafts above our heads.
In front of us, the miniature lights of a town called Honningsvåg.
The vast ocean surrounds us, stretching away into the distance until it encounters the horizon.
A barrier of darkness…the black sky polka doted by the stars.
Out of nowhere, without trumpets or sounds to announce its arrival, the bud of a giant flower.
Slowly, color and light begin to manifest.
A cosmic tulip blooming.
A lotus flower blossoms.
My mind knows that we are witnessing the Northern Lights but all I see is magic.
The Cree Indians held that the Aurora was part of life’s circle and were the spirits of the dead who remained in the sky above their loved ones. The Cree believed that the lights were spirits of these departed friends and relatives trying to communicate with those they had left behind on earth.
