My latest interview with #Indiewire. Thank you #RobertDaniels and Indiewire, I appreciate it. Excerpt: And yet, his name is rarely mentioned alongside Spike Lee, John Singleton, the Hughes brothers, or Julie Dash in discussions about the decade’s most important Black auteurs. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t belong to a singular era? His movie acting career began with the Blaxploitation hit “Car Wash”; his television career coincided with the rise of African American filmmakers during the 1980s — now known as the L.A. Rebellion — during which he helmed episodes of “Dallas” (making him the first African American director to do so) and “Falcon Crest”; the height of his directorial feature run happened during the Black New Wave of the 1990s, when he was also making white-led movies like the Olympia Dukakis vehicle “The Cemetery Club.” “In those days, if you were a Black director, you were expected to only do projects that were Black-oriented,” Duke told IndieWire during a recent interview via video call from his Los Angeles home. “And I wanted to break out [of] that box.” Link to Interview: https://www.indiewire.com/2022/08/bill-duke-90s-movies-deep-cover-sister-act-2-1234753058/ #ARageinHarlem #DeepCover #MenaceIISociety #Predator #SisterAct2BackintheHabit #DukeMediaFoundation #YouniteNetwork #DukeMediaEntertainment #realbillduke #carlgilliard @sydthewriter #torrencebrannonreese #felixgiles #mpjinews #williammichaelbarbee #Dallas #FalconCrest #actor #director
We’ve lost another great talent and an amazing woman. Rest Well, #LtUhura, #NichelleNichols. As Uhura, Nichols was one of the first Black women ever to play a main cast role on a television series, as “Star Trek” creator #GeneRoddenberry wanted the crew of the #USSEnterprise to come from many diverse backgrounds. Uhura, whose surname came from the Swahili word for “freedom,” was the ship’s communications officer with expertise in linguistics. Nichols was going to leave the show for Broadway, but Martin Luther King Jr. convinced her to stay. “‘You cannot, you cannot…for the first time on television, we will be seen as we should be seen every day, as intelligent, quality, beautiful, people who can sing dance, and can go to space, who are professors, lawyers,’” Nichols recalled King saying to her in a 2013 interview.“‘If you leave, that door can be closed because your role is not a Black role, and is not a female role, he can fill it with anybody even an alien.’” Her most famous scene coming in the 1968 episode “Plato’s Stepchildren,” where the Enterprise crew are held hostage by a telekinetic race called the Platonians and forced via mind control into humiliating situations. In one such situation, #CaptainKirk, played by William Shatner, was forced to kiss Uhura. ON THIS FLASHBACK MONDAY: “Mandy”, starring Bill Duke and Nicholas Cage. Bill received rave reviews for his role in “Mandy” The Hollywood Reporter called Bill “Mandy’s Secret Weapon”. Bill Duke, played Caruthers, Red’s (Nicholas Cage) friend, a man living off the grid and away from prying eyes in a modest RV encampment-cum-arms depot. “Caruthers interregnum lends the film a welcome, and necessary, layer of reality to augment its unreality. Caruthers knows who, and what, Red is after, and he’s happy to expound as plot demands. “So whatcha hunting?” he asks. “Jesus freaks,” Red replies. “I didn’t know they was in season,” says Caruthers.” “Being a movie’s designated Exposition Character is, about nine times out of ten, a thankless job. Mandy thanks Duke profusely, because he takes that job, that one scene, and channels the function of exposition into language thick with gravitas. “No one knows where they come from,” Caruthers tells Red, framed by golden light pouring in from the windows as he sinks in his recliner. “First it was stories from the interstate, leaving truckers for dead, prostitutes vanishing, and gutted bodies on doorsteps, and always the same: Biker gang, black bikes, only seen at night.” Duke draws out each line, every word, as though the syllables are the last bits of meat he’s sucking from the bone. He’s enjoying himself, a wary tremble in his voice as he warns Red that he’s got low odds of avenging Mandy and living”. A little behind the scenes look at us doing a voice-over for my book “The Journey: A Tale of Human Healing.” “The Journey” is a coming of age story. At the center of the narrative is “Nobody” who goes on a journey in pursuit of becoming somebody. Upon his departure his parents equipped him with three crucial provisions for endurance. They also give him an instructional road map on how to find what he is so desperately searching for. The journey takes “Nobody” up and down, over and under, near and far, and in circles. Towards the end of the journey “Nobody” has a startling epiphany. He had been deaf and blind to the truth because of his disposition. Consumed with tears, the revelation draws him to his knees, and to closure. No matter who we are, black, white, purple, orange, green, young, or old, “The Journey” speaks to the child in each one of us. It is inspirational and a conversation starter. The Journey’s message addresses issues and challenges relevant today such as, self-image, acceptance, bullying, tolerance, equality and more. It’s available on www.shopbillduke.com And if you’re in or close to Los Angeles on November 19, 2022, I’m being honored at the “I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival”. I’m extremely honored to be an honoree at the much-celebrated “I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival”. If you’re in and around Los Angeles come out to enjoy the festivities. #StreetCornerRenaissance will be performing for my honoree event on November 19, 2022. They sang Happy Birthday to me during a LIVE Event for my book and I enjoyed them tremendously. Great Doo-Wop A cappella group. “I’ve Known Rivers”, was inspired by the classic Langston Hughes poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (1921), wherein the poet speaks of the journey and history of Black people. FAMLI Inc.’s grass root efforts guide youth who live in areas known for gang violence, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, low graduation rates and other life difficulties. Its unique mentoring and school based art programs follow a nine-point curriculum, which teaches youth to accept personal responsibility for their lives. Proceeds support the non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that’s been effectively transforming and building our youth, FAMLI, Inc Foundation for Arts, Mentorship, and Leadership (at the helm of the Film Festival). To find out more about them here’s a link: www.famlisoul.org This year the “I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival” will salute the classically trained actor and writer Max Julien, who won over legends of fans with his portrayal of “Goldie” in the 1970s film “The Mack”. We will have a screening of “The Mack” during the film festival’s activities, as a tribute to this unsung creative genius.
