It’s official! “The Watermelon Woman” is now part of the National Film Registry Library at The Library of Congress. The National Film Registry selects films for preservation based on their historical, cultural, and aesthetic contributions to the legacy of American cinema. I’m heartbroken to learn that a near and dear collaborator, actress, artist, activist and ally, Nora Breen passed away during the holidays. We met in Philly in the early 80’s in the basement of The Wooden Shoe Bookstore where we volunteered among the collection of radical literature and off beat vinyl. She was one of the few people who made the city her canvas for making art and she was always happy to play “the white woman” in my critique of race privilege and queer injustice. Back in the day, Nora appeared in THE POTLUCK AND THE PASSION, GREETINGS FROM AFRICA, and appeared in the fictional photo archive for my first feature, THE WATERMELON WOMAN. Last October we reconnected. Nora updated me on her street art projects and rasing hell in her insta stories. In her last text to me Nora closed with: “Keep on keeping on and forever Philly.” Rest in the Radical Nora! @thenorabreenproject. http://www.norabreen.com/ @thewoodenshoebooks
