Kirsten Ramsay Instagram – This beautiful Chinese vase arrived in The Repair Shop with a long history.
Having been made into a lamp base many years before, it had sat alongside Kate’s Dad’s chair throughout her childhood, until an unfortunate accident with a skipping rope smashed it into pieces.
The lamp was repaired and after the death of her father it served as a reminder of happy times.
Kate kindly entrusted me to take the old restoration apart and to try and give the lamp a new lease of life.
This was such a beautiful piece to work on, not just the blue and white decoration but the feel of the glaze on the surface was a pleasure to handle, a testament to the quality of the original maker.
The vase responded well to treatment and I was able to dismantle the old repair and clean away the previous adhesive and fill material with good results.
The finished piece was bonded using conservation grade adhesive a colour fill technique and a small amount of retouching.
There is s real satisfaction in knowing that this vase can now be used and enjoyed for many more years to come.
