Siobhan Williams Instagram – The most unbelievable little creatures. Their hearts can beat over 1,000 times a minute and they only weigh a few grams. Despite their tiny size, some species of hummingbird migrate thousands of miles- and the craziest part ? They do it alone. They are solitary in their migration, needing to find sustenance frequently in each place to be able to keep their unbelievably fast metabolisms going. The Anna’s hummingbird (pictured) does not migrate. They are incredibly tough, remaining here all winter. IMPORTANT NOTE: if you choose to have a hummingbird feeder, it is VITAL that you sterilize it, and give it fresh nectar every 5 to 7 days, depending on the temperature outside. If you do not do this, a fungus can grow in the sugar that kills hummingbirds. I have seen these effects firsthand and it is devastating. If you choose to have a hummingbird feeder, it is a huge responsibility. If you do not clean it as regularly as you need to, it will kill these birds. Keep that in mind when you make the decision to have one! These birds are better off, finding their own food sources than drinking from lethal contaminated ones. Please spread the word!
