Delighted to announce that our next @betweentwobooks pick is Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s The Dance Tree.
Set in Strasbourg in the summer of 1518, Lisbet’s sister-in-law returns to her family’s farm from seven years’ penance for an unnamed crime. At the same time, Lisbet’s husband must travel to Heidelberg to fight the accusation that the farm’s bees have stolen the pollen to make their honey. As he leaves, a woman starts dancing in the city square, and cannot stop. Soon, so many women are dancing that stages must be built and falsifiers arrested. With a mix of superstition and religious fervour, the dancing plague serves as a background to this domestic story of love and loss.
