Leonardo DiCaprio Instagram – In the Red Sea, coral reefs are still in relatively good shape compared to other reefs around the world. Scientists want to study exactly what about this area allows coral reefs to thrive and what the Red Sea can tell them about other coral reefs. To date, ocean warming hasn’t really affected the coral reefs in the Red Sea. Warmer ocean waters bleach coral reefs elsewhere, a disturbance to the symbiotic relationships of the coral reefs’ microorganisms. A recent proposal calls for a new marine protected area to protect the Red Sea’s heat-tolerant reefs from other threats to ensure that scientists can continue to study them and even possibly create a nursery to restore degraded reefs elsewhere.
