“This challenge originally started in Turkey last week in response to the murder of 27 year old Pınar Gültekin by a former boyfriend. The challenge was created to shine a light on the country’s shockingly high femicide rate and on the government efforts to roll back legislation designed to protect women from gender-based violence.
This challenge is a show of solidarity to show that we stand together, we are unafraid, we are sick of the lack of accountability for the perpetrators. The whole challenge was started by Turkish women to say that they are appalled by the governments decision to withdraw from the Istanbul convention.
This challenge is to say that we deserve to take up space and to be safe in the process. We are all #womensupportingwomen This challenge is to bring awareness so that Pinar isn’t just another black and white face in another news item about femicide.”
