Katrina Weidman Instagram – Exciting news! Batman (my dog š¶ not the other Batman š) will be on @60minutes @andersoncooper @cbstv this Sunday 7PM!!!
Batman was diagnosed with #osteosarcoma when he was only 10 months old. The prognosis for osteo dogs is, at best, a year even with conventional treatment (amputation and chemo). We were complexly devastated š and the situation seemed hopeless.
Luckily we were told about this new vaccine from Dr. Nicola Mason. Fate also stepped in as we ended up being connected to someone whose dog was in the first trial of vaccines years prior and that dog ended up living an additional 6 years!!! 6!!!!
With that information we felt pretty confident moving forward with amputation, chemo, and enrolling Batman in a study for immunotherapy.
This last piece was the final bit of info that made us move forward thoughā¦
the vaccine was being studied not only to help dogs, but to help children with osteosarcoma! This type of cancer is so similar in dogs and children that the hope was, if successful in dogs, they could move to humans.
This upcoming #60minutes episode shows the FIRST child (teen) to receive the vaccine and highlights Dr Mason and her incredible work.
We are thrilled to know that the vaccine has shown so much promise.
We strongly believe that the vaccine is a huge part of why weāre now celebrating Batmanās 5TH birthday this Fall š„³
Batman will prob only be on screen for a few seconds, but we were beyond honored to be part of this project. Dr Mason and her team at @pennvetschool gave us hope when there was NONE. As a pet parent I canāt even tell you how invaluable their guidance and study results were to us. I would imagine this feeling will be 100x that to the families affected by childhood osteosarcoma.
Science is incredible, the researches and drs who do this are š¦øāāļø #heros , and dogs just keep proving that they really are our best friends šš„°
