🚨 5.3 million litres of toxic tailings and counting leaked at Imperial’s Kearl site
ACFN has sounded the alarm on 5.3 million litres of tailings leaked at the Kearl site in early February in addition to four tailings leaks that have been ongoing since at least May of 2022. Imperial Oil and the Alberta Energy Regulator failed to notify the community about the breach. “Our people harvest food from the forests and rivers adjacent to the Kearl Project. Some of these foods have been shared throughout our community. We have been eating them for months, unaware of the potential danger.” shared Chief Adams
Imperial and the Alberta Energy Regulator have yet to address the issue and cannot confirm how long the four tailing ponds were leaking before they became aware of the breach back in May of 2022.
Industry and AER must be held accountable for this disaster and for once again putting the lives of wildlife and local communities at risk in the name of profit.
