Kenny Sebastian Instagram – 18 year old me wouldn’t believe it if I told him.
On March 27th 2023, I got to see @johnmayer live in his brand new solo tour at @statefarmarena in Atlanta.
As a stand up comedian and amateur musician myself who weirdly doesn’t have any interest in celebrities who are involved in sports or movies…I freaking love….John Mayer.
Now, the most common perception of him is his first single “Your body is a wonderland” which is like associating Shahrukh Khan only to his movie “Darr.”
John dabbles in blues, country and ofcourse pop. He is such a tremendous guitar player that Eric Clapton considers him a GOAT (Clapton actually said that after playing with Mayer).
Apart from being a masterful songwriter, He is eloquent, funny ( He does a music comedy live show with Dave Chappelle as well) and he has dreamy eyes (yeah I said it).
But John Mayer for me is my singing teacher and my heartbreak companion. He first came into my life as a 16-17 year old boy who badly wanted to sing and play like him.
I sat in my room alone and just mimicked his voice and guitar playing till (after months of practice) could hold a note decently.
Few years later, as I was mending a broken heart while being on tour myself as a stand up comedian across the world , his album “ Search for everything” had songs that literally felt like they were composed to console me and give me hope.
I know it sounds silly but I finally understood what people meant when they say “this song speaks to me”.
It’s the best example of “convenient destiny”.
At the right time and the right place, The universe feels like it has been created for you but even if that isn’t a true, it’s a helpful lie.
Watching him live a few feet away (the cost of those tickets will make sure I never forget how close I was) was so surreal that I felt proud that my art could pay to watch his art (a line I stole from @brydenlewis who excitedly texted me after he saw my insta stories).
Thank you John, for just writing songs for yourself , for others and for always being John.
