They only have their own experience and what they’ve decided to agree to be true. Which is valuable to an extent, but it also forecloses the infinite number of other possibilities that exist beyond their experience. This happens all the time in Hollywood. Some will tell you how things are or how things work, and, invariably, the wisest advice you end up hearing is that no one actually knows much of anything. Over and over again, the project that’s sure to be a hit falls flat, and the unknown little project soars and goes on to win many awards. Experience ideally informs us but doesn’t limit us. So keep this Emerson quote in mind whenever someone tells you the way things are with respect to getting older or being a gay person or being a woman or being a person of color or any other thing that one might have ideas of limitation around. Because, beyond the challenges, are infinite other possibilities for how things can work out depending on how we choose to see them and how we choose to show up.
