Danielle Robay Instagram – @gotaprilshowers is the creator of 🦄 @afrounicorn_official a brand she likens to the “modern day Hello Kitty”. She is the first female, Black-owned business to own a licensed character brand in a major retailer (i.e. Walmart and Target). To put into perspective what she has been able to accomplish: Afro Unicorn sits on shelves next to Disney characters, star wars characters; her peers are huge corporations. I was enthralled by April and 𝒉𝒐𝒘 she figured out how to make this all happen. Gayle King was too— I loved the story she did on April! April has a mantra: “𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞.” And it turns out, that while she was working to help others break barriers, she actually broke one of her own.
