The strike organized by @RutgersAAUP has produced tentative agreements on pay and job security for faculty—we applaud them for including caste bias in their list of concerns. This move, if ratified by the unions’ members in the coming weeks, would add @RutgersU to the growing list of nationwide universities that have made caste an explicit protected category. @RutgersU, like many other institutions of higher education, has a caste problem that is largely hidden. One professor states, “I hear about caste-based discrimination all the time from my students…I hear about it as a problem in their lives, in their communities, on campus, in dorms, in their friend groups. I hear about their fears if they were to ever talk about it publicly.”
