Playing the Great War for the first time in Tampa….Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine getting to play a song for 80,000 people on acoustic guitar with @taylorswift❤️🥹❤️eternally grateful for all the music we have made and your friendship The #tstheerastour is the greatest show I’ve ever seen!!!!!
I’m so excited to share the first album that @teddysphotos and I have made, Subtract (-), is out everywhere tonight at midnight. I’m so deeply grateful that I had the chance to make this music with Ed and I couldn’t be more proud of it. There’s relief that comes after deep sorrow, and I hope you’ll feel that listening to these songs. Thank you Ed for trusting me to be your partner on this journey and allowing yourself to be vulnerable and to take risks. We had so much help in making this record, first and foremost from @heyjonlow who engineered and mixed the record. And my brother @brycedessner and @mooserob who helped compose beautiful arrangements. The incredible @900x, @tingalayo, @jt_bates_ and @lanzprojects appear on many songs. I hope you enjoy Subtract as much as I do. Ed and I have continued to make music and I’m excited to share what comes next also. @teddysphotos @heyjonlow @brycedessner @mooserob @bellaicecream @randymerrill_sterling @900x @lanzprojects @james_krivchenia @tingalayo @reidjenkinsmusic @dnelnelson @jt_bates_ @kiyukiyukiyuki @kresnick @claricejensen @lisahannigan @kaufyismynamo @alexproctor_esq Mike Lewis 📸 @marksurridge @nicminns @annieleibovitz

I was introduced to @teddysphotos through @taylorswift when I helped produce their song “Run” for Taylor’s Version of Red last year. It was special for me to hear two old friends singing together and bringing the past to life — and an interesting way to meet someone, working on music remotely first before actually meeting in person. Some time later we met up in New York City for dinner and talked at length about music and life. It felt so relaxed and as if we already knew each other. Thinking about Ed’s music, I realized I was hearing things in my head I thought we could explore, musical ideas that would allow for more space and bring out what I admire about his guitar playing and incredible voice. I spent some time sketching these ideas and shared a folder with Ed. A few months later in the winter of 2021, he started writing to them and sending sometimes multiple song ideas a day, inspired by a very difficult period he was going through in his life. I could really empathize with what he was feeling and was eager to help realize these songs. We then met up to work in England at the beginning of 2022 and finished over 30 songs together in a week. I’m so excited to share that 14 of the songs we made in that time comprise Ed’s 6th album, “subtract”, which will Be released on May 5th. I couldn’t be more proud of this record and the vulnerability and honesty Ed showed in making these songs with me. There’s something deeply vulnerable and ultimately cathartic and therapeutic about shifting sadness and pain and anxiety into music, transforming darkness into light in this way and sharing these sentiments with others. This is what “subtract” does so beautifully and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. Thanks so much to Ed for trusting me to help him on his journey as an artist. I continue feel so grateful to have the opportunity to make music with so many friends, new and old, and to experience the way community grows and grows.

Gracie (@gracieabrams) first came to work with me at Long Pond two years ago and since then we have gathered many times, growing to be close friends (this picture makes me imagine we are almost like siblings) and writing multiple songs a day together. It’s been one of the most natural and prolific collaborations of my career — the tonality of music I would sketch each day somehow served as an ideal home for Gracie’s introspective lyricism and sense of melody…she showed such courage allowing herself to be vulnerable and writing songs that are at turns minimalist and fragile, forceful and cathartic and where the music is allowed to breathe. Twelve of these make up her debut album, “Good Riddance”, which is out today. I couldn’t be more proud of Gracie and this record and I hope you will make this music part of your life the way I have. Thanks to all our friends who contributed so beautifully to this music. @gracieabrams @900x @bellaicecream @heyjonlow @randymerrill_sterling @matiastellez @brycedessner @postmoderndrummer @mooserob @mattfbarrick @james_krivchenia @tingalayo @lanzprojects

I’m so excited to share that a very special song called “Boat” that I wrote and produced with @teddysphotos is out today. Boat was the first song that Ed and I wrote for his new album – (subtract) that comes out May 5th. I’m so proud of Ed for allowing himself to be vulnerable and write about his emotions in facing loss and illness in those closest to him. I have long felt that shifting life’s challenges and sadness into catharsis through music makes you feel better. I stumbled upon this when I was young and struggling myself. It’s how I learned to make meaningful music, which somehow became my career. This song is a beautiful representation of the entire album thematically and sonically. I couldn’t be more proud of it and of Ed and I can’t wait for you to hear the whole thing. Thanks to @mooserob for beautiful strings and @heyjonjow for amazing engineering and mixing as always. @teddysphotos @heyjonlow @mooserob @randymerrill_sterling @900x 📸 @annieleibovitz

Tramp was the first record I produced — it remains so special to me and I’m deeply grateful to my dear friend @sharonvanhalen for trusting me on her journey and playing such an important part in mine. There is a deluxe anniversary edition of Tramp out that includes an unreleased song we made in my garage in Brooklyn back then, “This Is Too Right”. If you haven’t heard this record it’s essential listening.❤️🥹❤️

One of our very favorite artists and a dear friend of all of us in @thenational — @haydendesser has released an incredible new album today – “Are We Good” – it features @feistmusic and some writing from Matt Berninger and Hayden even let me mess around a little bit here and there. We’ve always called Hayden “The Legend” ….and I think you’ll hear why if you go immediately listen to this record.❤️
We released a new @thenational song today called “New Order T-shirt” and I confess to listening to it on repeat. It reminds me of everyone I’ve ever known and loved.

Today marks the release of Complete Mountain Almanac, a deeply moving collaborative record between @rebekkakarijord , my sister @jess_dess and my brother @brycedessner and I. It’s one of the most beautiful and important projects I’ve ever been a person of — thé songs chronicle my sister’s struggle with breast cancer through the months of the year. You’ll hear the sublime voice and compositions of Rebekka —and my brother and I embracing our sister in the music, playing guitars in the most elemental and brotherly we know, as we did as kids, intertwined and spontaneous. Jess’s words and her artwork for the album speak to her ability to shift some of the pain and suffering she was experiencing into art and a kind of catharsis that I think is so deeply relatable — we will all struggle with illness and face our own mortality many times — finding creative ways to express it helps. Please have a listen and buy the beautiful vinyl if that’s your thing. ❤️
I was very lucky to spend time last year at Long Pond with the brilliant Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (@nannabh) from @ofmonstersandmen making songs for her forthcoming solo record “How To Start A Garden” …(Nanna and my dear friend Josh @kaufyismynamo made others for the same record) … the first song we recorded, “Crybaby”, is out today. Check out the video over at paste and I can’t wait for you to hear Nanna’s record ….thanks to Bella @bellaicecream as always for brilliant engineering 🙏 📸 ⤵️ @redjuicyjumpsuit @silkenweinberg
