I was chuffed to be asked to sit for it, thrilled when I heard it was a finalist in the Archibald and beside myself (at times quite literally) when I heard the news Andrea had won the Packing Room Prize.
The whole process has been wonderful – I love Andrea’s art, and sitting for her was so much fun. I feel like she absolutely got me. What. A. Joy.

🎉 Just announced: The 2023 Packing Room Prize has been awarded to Andrea Huelin for her portrait of comedian Cal Wilson!
Now in its 32nd year, the Packing Room Prize is awarded to the best entry in the Archibald Prize as judged by the Art Gallery staff who receive, unpack and hang the entries. Former Head Packer Brett retired in 2022, passing the baton to the ‘Packing Room Pickers’ – three members of the Packing Room team, Timothy, Monica and Alexis, who together selected Huelin’s artwork ‘Clown jewels’ as the winner.
‘Clown jewels’ is the first entry into the Archibald Prize for Cairns-based @andreahuelinartist. Huelin painted @calbowilson modelling one of the elaborate headpieces the comedian made at home during the Melbourne lockdowns, crafted using plastic toys, shiny ornaments and a hot glue gun to wear in her lighthearted Instagram videos at the time.
Congratulations to Andrea Huelin, and to all of our finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. All finalists have been unveiled on our website today, and the winners will be announced at noon on Friday 5 May.
