Danai Gurira Instagram – I’m thrilled to announce I sat down with Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel @Swimone who is an incredible force that works to provide education and resources for BIPOC youth to create positive swim readiness experiences. Simone is what we call “A Girl We Love” at #LoveOurGirls, which I created to raise awareness of the inequities women and girls face, while simultaneously uplifting and supporting all of the female leaders bringing about change. In 2023, my goal was to relaunch Love Our Girls through conversations with inspirational women to learn more about the work they are doing to make a change in the world today. To kick this off, Simone and I discussed her often lonely journey as a Black woman in the field of competitive swimming, the work she has done to help young people of color gain equitable access to pools and skills in swimming, and the portrayal of people of color navigating water in Black Panther: #WakandaForever, and more. This was an inspiring conversation around Black people’s swim stories and how we change our narrative around this sport — which is also a skill that can be the difference between life and death. Simone truly embodies the mission of Love Our Girls and I can’t wait for you all to hear our conversation – coming very soon.
