My fav auntie @leylashphoto died yesterday morning after a brutal fight with cancer. She loved Instagram *so much* and so I wanted to honor her here and share some of my favs of her art and beautiful face.
If Leyla couldn’t get me on the phone for an hour chat (her preference) she would write me these essay like emails (i have 13 years worth of specific, loving, detailed tracking and advice from her) and in the last one she said this:
it is hard to explain except to say you must always be your best defendant, gentle guardian who knows she is only so because she knows your own self best and has accepted you better than anyone else, not in a felt way, but in a way that is about knowing and commitment and principle, so that when The O/opponents (others/your own critical voice) infringe upon it incessantly as it does and will if you can perceive it, you can more easily brush it aside like a gnat.
