Zero hesitation recommending this 📖 🤍
Sabrina Boggs is a mum of 3 young boys & works in a care home 🏡 as a lifeguard 🏊♀️ with a deep appreciation for the pool. I empathise with her on that; I’ve loved swimming since I was little too. On her quest to “rejig” her Dad’s memory (Fergus Boggs, who has sadly had a stroke) the mission unexpectedly turns into A LOT MORE when she discovers his secret 🤫 marble collection… with some extremely expensive ones missing?
I’ve never collected marbles myself BUT *FUN FACT* when I mentioned this to a family member, they imminently confessed to owning hidden box of marbles 😳 How many of you lil’ tight-lipped Mibsters are out there?!
^
Of course, this isn’t “just” about marbles; although they do shine ✨ at the heart of it.
The key 🔑 concept is actually loss – & ergo rebirth.
And that’s what enticed me.
From the loss of Fergus’s memory; the stroke – to the tragic death of Fergus’s older brother; Hamish – including the omnipresent misplacement of oneself; loss of identity with kids/marriage/job – reduction, dissipation & erosion motors this story… But, also provides that magic 🪄 pathway for “finding” yaself again – & most importantly, recovery!
It’s the beauty of the “recouping” that strikes hard & ultimately drives this narrative. Behind the “marbles” there’s a moving tale of two brothers. Beyond that there’s a strong link to the apple 🍎 never falling too from its tree; with being true to yourself reiterated.
I give you my word that it is 💯 worth the read.
There’s humour, flashbacks, heartwarming & heart wrenching moments. It’s an all-rounder.
Like I said, I’ve never collected marbles, but I was absolutely hooked from start to finish. Might be one of my new fave reads💥 | Posted on 02/May/2023 23:16:42
