I count myself as one of the lucky ones, as you also let me meet Anna Mae Bullock, a little black girl from Tennessee who had a voice of ice and fire and legs so long they could kick down the doors of heaven. You taught me how to stand in my own power, how to embrace the dark and the light and that failure is merely a pitstop on the road to its sister called success. You taught me the true meaning of forgiveness even though life makes it hard to forget. You also taught me how to love and be loved. To be able to witness your relationship with Erwin up close has been one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received.
They say you die twice. Once when your soul leaves this body and then when someone says your name for the last time on this earth. But, Tina, you will never be forgotten, my immortal mortal. Your music changed lives worldwide and your fierce transparency about your own story inspired and saved millions. You opened doors that had been closed to you for generations of artists and you taught us all how to wear short skirts so our legs could be free. Your sacrifices will always be remembered and the moments we shared will forever be tattooed on this heart of mine. I am blessed that I got a chance to dance with you during the dusk of your life.
