“This Knife K•lls The Patriarchy” is a genesis piece of “De•th by 1000 Cuts” project. The artist uses repurposed metal foraged from an abandoned prison. In the production of these works, the artist uses her skills that she learned while being subjected to forced labor during the 2 years she served as a political prisoner in Russian labor camps.
De•th by 1000 cuts refers to an ancient method of tort•re in which numerous small cuts were made on a victim’s body. None of the cuts were deadly by themselves, but the combination of them would cause them to die a slow, painful de•th. Similarly, every activist who raise a voice against an oppressive authoritarian system, causes it to ble•d and to, eventually, 🪦.
The artist who was thrown in prison for her art and has to bear her criminal record for the rest of her life, is reclaiming the identity of a criminal, wears it as a badge of honor, grabs back her agency and stands up against oppressors.
Lucky to be working with @properreplica on this project.
