In the production of these works, the artist uses her skills that she learned while being subjected to forced labor during the 2 years she served as a political prisoner in Russian labor camps. De•th by 1000 cuts refers to an ancient method of tort•re in which numerous small cuts were made on a victim’s body. None of the cuts were deadly by themselves, but the combination of them would cause them to die a slow, painful de•th. Similarly, every activist who raise a voice against an oppressive authoritarian system, causes it to ble•d and to, eventually, 🪦. The artist who was thrown in prison for her art and has to bear her criminal record for the rest of her life, is reclaiming the identity of a criminal, wears it as a badge of honor, grabs back her agency and stands up against oppressors.
