Pop Conference returns in person from April 27 – April 30, 2023, at NYU. Under the banner theme “Let’s Get it Together”: Gatherings, Club Cultures, Parties, & Beyond, this 4-day live event brings together the world’s leading pop scholars, journalists, writers & musicians to explore pop music’s role in hospitality, conviviality, & spaces of gathering. In light of recent disruptions & transitions, musicians, critics, & cultural theorists are revisiting & reimagining the club.
#popcon2023 kicks off at 5pm ET on April 27 w/ the keynote panel Find Me in the Club: On the Power of Music to Move & Connect Us. Award-winning NPR Music writer @AnnkPowers moderates a discussion about spaces of gathering, assembly, & the power of music to make connections w/ a powerful lineup of idiosyncratic music makers: NYC singer-songwriter-producer @kingprincess69, New Orleans indie electronic music critical favorite @dawnrichard, & Canadian-raised, Berlin-based electroclash legend @peachesnisker.
This year’s conference will subsequently feature over 30 panel-length sessions taking place in blocks scheduled over the following 3 days, before ending on Sunday, April 30, w/ a closing keynote panel discussion on the power of music to compel & socially connect people, featuring multiple generations of African-American super-producers: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees & 11-time Grammy nominees for Producer of the Year @officialjamandlewis, hit-making superproducer & entrepreneur @timbaland, & @takeadaytrip, the Grammy-nominated production duo David Biral & Denzel Baptiste— in a conversation moderated by @jasonkingsays, Chair of the Clive Davis Institute.
