Kevin Smith Instagram – 20 years ago today, my Dad died. So this morning, my brother Don and I took our Mom to church. Shockingly, the roof didn’t cave in on the director of DOGMA. The mass was celebrated in memory of Pop – a man who shaped my life, both literally and figuratively before he left this world. Two decades back, my whole family happened to be in Philadelphia at the same time – so they all came to my #wizardworldphilly Q&A. After the Q&A, we went to dinner at @mortonssteak: @jenschwalbach, me, Dad, Donald, @donsgirlgrace, @virginia_in_vienna & her husband Eric (Don’s husband Jerry was stuck in Florida), where we had the time of our lives for the last time in his life. After a memorable meal with the family he co-created, Dad died in the wee hours of the following morning, June 1, 2003. A portion of his ashes have resided with me since his cremation, as a constant reminder of the quiet patriarch without whom I wouldn’t even exist. My sister has long maintained that I based Silent Bob on Dad – the guy who said very little unless he had something funny or insightful to impart (ironically, that would mean Jay is based on my Mom). I don’t know if I got Silent Bob from Dad, but I got nearly everything else. In the pic of me at the lectern, the bald spot in the front row is my Father – who fed me Standup comedy albums as a kid and loved to watch me talk to a crowd, knowing those records made an impact on his youngest son. While growing up, Dad took me to the movies all the time too – so he likely knew both my careers as a storyteller came indirectly from his unintentional influence. I’m happy he got to meet @harleyquinnsmith (he was a big fan), but he’s been gone twenty years and I still miss him. So if you can (and if you wanna), hug your Dads for me today, Kids. And if you’re in Toronto on Friday or Jersey on Saturday, come see me at the @sandersoncentrebrantford or @smodcastlecinemas. That sounds like a self-serving plug because it is – but it’s also in memory of a guy who’d still be in the front row watching me if he could. Miss you, Pop.
