Tonight will mark 30 years exactly that I laid my eyes on the band Tool ( @toolmusic ).
Rarely does one have a chance to go to a concert and, by chance, see a new act. The story is more peculiar because where and how it took place.
I was 16 and a half and was traveling to Los Angeles from Zagreb to visit my brother at UCLA. I had a layover for 1 night in Zurich. I came to the hostel and took a booklet for events in the city for the summer. By the end I came across Volkshaus and saw Tool (whodat?) and then Rage against the Machine (🤯🤯🤯) and then Fishbone.
So I came into this old concert hall, typical for classical music acts. It was void of chairs on the ground floor. A wave of sound whooshed over me as I was approaching the stage. I came to stage left, and in front of me was this ominous apparition with hair dangling down, barely moving and wailing on a Gibson. It was @adamjones_tv . His screeching guitar scraped over my skin and made my blood boil. I looked over to center stage, and there in the middle was this convulsing, spasmicly swaying ball of energy in bike shorts, James Maynard Keenan ( @iamthebriefcase ). The intensity of his voice was palpable, letting out long, brutal screams that at moments also was angelic, soothing crooning. He had a mission to make everyone there feel their passion and love. Next to him, stage right was Paul d’Amour, a punky bass that had a brooding effect on my chest. And then behind them – the monster, the master, the octopus – Danny Carey. Relentless, beating, precise, complicated yet simple, technically superb drumming…
I only managed to hear 2 songs before their set was over (I believe it was Opiate followed by Flood). I was burnt to a crisp, amazed, and over the moon with what I just witnessed. Then Rage came on and I lost some 3 liters of fluids moshing and jumping and screaming, uber adolescent angst let loose and free.
Maynard came on later to sing “Know yout Enemy”, his collab with Rage. Just mind-boggling.
