Happy Mother’s Day to everyone celebrating! I was with my mother in February – the second photo is her now. While her Alzheimers is worsening, it is moving slowly thanks to a careful diet (lower carb with no junk) & exercise (2 long daily walks) program. Her smile still brightens every room!

My dear friend (and barber) Willard Bostock died suddenly yesterday. He attended grade school with my wife and built the great @bluehairstudio in our hometown. He was a brilliant artist and musician — he deserved his reputation for kindness in our community. He was also a spectacular athlete and remained in excellent shape throughout his life, which we discussed during my last haircut earlier this month. When healthy, young people die unexpectedly, life seems unfair. But Willard would have said that at least he lived every moment fully — and he’d encourage each of us to squeeze the last drop of life out of every single day.
Counting to make sure the whole family’s here! Being a father and grandfather has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I had brilliant role models in two superb surgeons and human beings – my father and father in law. Congrats to all the fathers being celebrated today… and to our mentors.

I am honored to be a vice-chair of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which celebrates Americans who treasure their immigrant roots. The @eihonors group has honored 90 people annually on Ellis Island for 40 years. Celebrating the importance of legal immigration to our nation is especially critical when immigrants are facing an uptick in hate crimes. Did you know that the average immigrant is a college graduate who creates 4 jobs? We must continue to celebrate immigrants who make our nation what it is today.

Since 2020, adolescent overdose deaths have more than doubled — Fentanyl represents 80% of all fatal adolescent drug overdoses. 7/10 of these had no documented opioid use history. Teens, believing they are taking FDA-approved prescription drugs, are being killed by counterfeit pills made with fentanyl that are being peddled to them on apps & are indistinguishable from legitimate meds, even to career DEA agents.  I spoke about my 20 year commitment to raising awareness about the importance that parents & teachers speak openly to teens about the dangers of addiction. Thank you to the Incubate Foundation for hosting this discussion with hundreds of School Board members on National Fentanyl Awareness Day.

Golf pushes seniors to walk up hills, focus on a specific skill (hitting a small white ball into a ridiculously distant hole), and stay mentally resilient despite the outcome. This is a perfect triad for longevity! As a rare perk, older players can take fewer strokes than their age to finish a round of golf. According to AskGolf.info, this remains rare as the percentage of golfers who shoot their age is less than 9 out of every million players, which makes my outing at Huntingdon Valley, PA so unique! My father in law Gerald Lemole and his close friend Roger Colley are both octogenarians and have both shot their age! I was collecting lessons all round long…

I enjoyed my visit to the Makerspace at @provident_charter_school in Pittsburgh, which allows kids to use their hands in a 21st century fashion. I’m excited that @healthcorps could support these students with its innovative health and wellness curriculum next fall!
