Alun Wyn Jones – Captain of Wales ( and the British Lions?)
Even before Princes ruled our land We honoured our leaders and warriors In poetry and song.
From season to season
we wait in valley and glen
for the hero to rise again in glory.
As battle is joined
The nation’s hopes and dreams,
Seeking the giant amongst giants,
The lion amongst Lions,
The iron fist laid gently on a child,
A gentle champion, strong and mighty, yet
Light of foot like Dylan!s gossamer, Demanding victory in the Dragon!s red.
We watched with wide and hungry eyes when battle lines were drawn
and one man stood as the nemesis of foes yet bearing victory with a lightness of soul
and gracious hand at battle!s end.
Alun Wyn,
A boy born to master the mysterious arts of scrum and line-out, ruck and maul,
A leader destined to carry all our hopes; Into him, that day,
a nation poured its pride
and saw the essence of the game
made human in his humble power
and in his giant’s soul.
On Alun Wyn Jones retirement from international rugby I thought I’d post a poem by my wonderful friend, poet, writer and campaigner for Welsh Eisteddfod and culture Euryn Ogwen Williams who sadly passed during covid
For my Welsh friends
I think it should be on show somewhere | Posted on 20/May/2023 15:00:59
