Congratulations to the Nepal Government for seeing the benefits that Non-Resident Nepalis bring to their birth countries and moving to create a future that is more prosperous for all. Granting NRNs this new legal citizenship, which will be known as the Non- Resident Nepali Citizenship, will allow NRNs to practise full economic, social and cultural rights. I believe it is a step in the right direction towards a more positive and prosperous future for the country. This makes tourism and investment easier – boosting the country and her people and creating highly-skilled and well-paid jobs. As a poor country, tourism is vital to Nepal. Tourism brings in about 6.7 percent to Nepal’s GDP, while its total impact was US $2.2 billion. In 2019, tourism supported over one million direct and indirect jobs, or 6.7 percent of total employment in Nepal. Approximately 80 percent of these jobs are in the most remote and resource-constrained regions. This means that the wealth is distributed from central areas like Kathmandu to less wealthy communities including the mountain communities. This benefits the people of those Big Mountain communities.
