One of the main goals for this book was to develop a deliberate incongruity, both visually and narratively (you’ll know when you see that bit). I was very much inspired by Barking Dogs Never Bite, Bong Joon-ho’s debut film. It has all the themes and ideas you’d find in Parasite but the tonal shifts are even more wild, and I was really attracted to that lack of polish, and wanted to do recreate something like that through line and style, using screentones as a painterly tool for instance, or having a stiff manga-ish character next to giacometti-ish figures. And, as my personal influences and obsessions are all over the place, it made sense on a purely emotional level, too. So far the reception from readers has been very warm which makes me happy!
