βIn his work titled Manger, Sanford Biggers presents a vibrant composition with interspersed darker hues.
Biggers uses history as a malleable material, which he repurposes and reinterprets, connecting temporalities of the past and future in homage to the stories of objects while allowing for new conceptual possibilities
– what the artists call “future ethnographies.” Biggers positions himself as a collaborator of the past while also examining the current sociopolitical landscape.
The Harlem-based artist repurposes antique quilts to explore their iconographic importance as a kind of secret language, delving into the long-debated historical narrative that such quilts signalled safe spaces along the Underground Railroad.β
