All my life I have had a massive complex about my thighs. I grew up in Germany where thic thighs = you’re labelled as fat.
I would hide them, I would try to squeeze them away, I would try to diet, to rub abrasive sponges over them. I tried almost anything to make them “skinny” and I would spend hours on sports tools trying to get rid of them.
When I came to Japan it got worse. My manager at the time told me to diet them away. Even when I got under weight she would still complain about my thighs being fat (until my stylist said “she’s a foreigner she has a different physique”. )
I heard in the USA thighs were ok but not in the Germany I grew up in and especially not in Japan.
Until a certain point in time, all anime featured skinny girls with beautiful skinny legs. That is why I tried not to wear too revealing clothes and cosplay characters where you could see thighs. I felt super self conscious about them, that’s why my fashion helped me hide them for years.
I would wish back the days of Ranma 1/2, and other anime made in the 80s, when thighs had been more acceptable.
That’s when Atelier Ryza, a game by Koei Techmo came onto the market and it became a game changer.
Before that, thighs seemed to have been “niche” in Japan but this game brought the “base” to the table and the fan base with it. It went to become one of their most popular Atelier titles with 3 popular games. Today it got announced that Atelier Ryza is getting an anime adaptation and I’m thrilled!!!
Especially recent posts I’ve been seeing on IG seem to show a trend to going back to skinny and “ditching the thighs and booty”. Posts like these made me worried for another Cathy somewhere having to go through the same pains as I did.
Please remember, whatever body shape you have, you are beautiful and body shapes should NEVER be a fashion trend. We should know better than to beat our bodies to being something they are not.
