Remember to consider developmental readiness more than age (approximately 6 months). A few days or weeks can make a big difference in readiness. ♥️ . 1. Does Baby Sit up on their Own Without Assistance? – A baby’s ability to sit up on their own, relatively unassisted, is one of the most important signs of readiness to eat. 2. Does Baby Have Head Control? – Is baby able to hold their head upright without falling forwards, sideways, or backwards? The head should be in proper alignment for safety with swallowing and also so baby can see their food. 3. Does Baby Reach for Objects and Toys? – Is baby able to grasp and release objects for success with self feeding? 4. Is Baby Showing Interest in Food? – This may be shown by reaching for a caregivers’ food, cup, or opening/closing their mouth when others are eating. 5. Is Baby’s Tongue Thrust Reflex Gone (or decreased)? – This shows their oral motor skill development. . Figuring out the “WHEN” can be nerve wracking.
