Nancy Lieberman Instagram – @thescore spoke to @nancylieberman, reminiscing with her on the incredible trials and tribulations of the @wnba, starting from where it all began with then-commissioner David Stern and our “Lady Magic”.
At the time, a young Lieberman had already solidified her position as one of the greats and was recruited by Stern in 1985 to work towards the creation of the WNBA. Twelve years later, Nancy was there to play during the opening season (at 39 years old!) just as Stern had hoped. Since then, Nancy has transitioned to working the business side of basketball and has been enjoying front-row seats to the WNBA’s almost 30 years of growth.
Even in retirement from the professional game, Nancy continues to support women’s basketball and is proud of the new girls gracing the court today, encouraging them to keep pushing the ball. “Don’t exhale. We’ve got to keep fighting and do the right thing. We’re in this. We’re in it for the long haul. It’s a beautiful thing. Today’s players are amazing gatekeepers of the game of basketball,” says Lieberman.
