Shweta Basu Prasad Instagram – Over the years, I think dubbing has become one of my favourite things about acting.
.
I remember dubbing for Makdee (2002), the entire film and having a blast. Iqbal (2005) was sync sound. @sudeepchatterjee.isc explained how our camera used for shooting Iqbal, was one of the first sync sound cameras in India back then.
.
It’s mostly sync sound format that we shoot in now (the voice recorded on set, while filming and used as is, in the final product. After sound mix and post production. Requirement for dubbing comes up during post production, if the sound designer wants it for technical reasons)
When a project is recorded sync sound, dubbing is done for clarity. Sometimes a scene, sometimes just few words (mostly outdoor shoots, with overlapping crowd/traffic noise or other such reasons)
.
It’s often hard to match the performance in dubbing. Specially an intense scene. Crying or laughing out loud. The performance with costumes, on a set with co-actors giving ques is very different from dubbing in a studio. However, dubbing, if done well can accentuate ones performance.
.
A great opportunity for actors to modulate their voice, to fine tune dialogues and the emotions. It’s amazing how slight breathing can also make such a difference to the overall performance.
