Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing Instagram – Who knew this trip would trigger the farmer in me? I was invited by @chanel.beauty to visit their unique open air lab in Gaujacq, in the southwest of France. A beautiful botanical garden, artisanal plant heaven if you may. Jean Thoby is the botanist in charge and special partner, an inspirational visionary who understands the importance of plant conservation from a holistic perspective. I was in awe as he showed us around the ‘nursery’ where the world’s Camellia expert has collected 2,000 different varieties of the Camellia flower, Gabrielle Chanel’s favorite And the main raw ingredient in CHANEL skincare.
Nothing is random though: From the thickness of the walls, the location on top of a hill, 360 view, perfect amount of sun, surrounded by water. It’s perfection!
I don’t know what I expected, but when I listened to Jean Thoby and Philippe Grandry speak about their approach when cultivating these flowers with CHANEL since ‘98 with the truest consideration for biodiversity, and an overall agroecological approach, respecting nature, I was relieved! Because what does pretty do when it means nothing? These are the kind of people you would trust after the apocalypse to restore planet earth. An exceptional project all rooted in Gabrielle’s love for the Camellia.
