Thank you Weather Queen for honoring our games night with a dramatic storm, it added the chicest snuggliest backdrop to our games night. Love ya girl. Quick bit of history- Gay Monopoly was an unofficial tongue in cheek version of monopoly developed by “The Parker Sisters”- truly some of the wittiest writers of all time (see “You were caught eating quiche”card) in 1983 to raise money to fund AIDS research which at the time was already devastating the gay community and which very little was being done to prevent by the (straight) powers that be (google Larry Kramer/Eric Sawyer/Anthony Fauci). You could buy it in stores and everything until Parker Brothers (owners of the actual monopoly game) sued them for copyright infringement because a)they are homophobic capitalists (ironic also given that the game was initially created to warn against capitalism) and b) they are boring (see Straight City photo to understand that reference). It’s now a really rare gem of a game so if you have/find one, look after it with all your heart and keep it close because it has immense historic significance. My favorite part of the game is the “Do you know your queer history?” card, where if you land on it have to answer a question about influential queer people throughout history- I learned about George Washington Carver, HansChristian Andersen and Benjamin Britten and was reminded of the passage in the Bible that tells us that King David loved his boyfriend Jonathan “surpassing the love of a woman” in the book of Samuel. Yes that’s actually in the Bible so you can keep that one for your next holiday season. Oh and the Benjamin Britten was gay. Didn’t know that either. Playing it amongst the ghosts of Fire Island (many many many queer people died of AIDS here- most had nowhere else to go) and a mere block from the house of Patient Zero (the first known person to be infected by the HIV virus) was profound to say the least. I love y’all. Look after after each other. Queer people are so powerful. We always have been and we always will be 😘🌈❤️ Fire Island Pines
