Right after Japan re-opened last year, I knew we had to do something to celebrate. Ideally, I would’ve invited the world inside the Abroad in Japan ramen shop, but for spectacular insurance reasons, that was never going to be a good idea. So the next best thing was opening a bar in Kyoto!🍻 A huge thank you to everybody who showed up throughout the week. It was absurdly fun and the video is now up on the Chris Abroad channel! Given how well it went, I suspect it won’t be the last time we do something like this either ⛩️ God bless Kyoto! Big thanks to the team! Couldn’t have pulled this off without you guys 🙏 @heyitssharla, @natsukitheman, @tokyoportfolio, @zewdoo, @_paulballard, @yasumatsuno 📸Photos by @_paulballard

Final cover reveal for the Abroad in Japan Book! 🇯🇵🥳🍻 Illustrated by the great @msaunders_ink who’ve I’ve been a fan of for many years and who recently finished working on the artwork for Stephen King’s books. Though with any luck, this won’t be quite as ominous as a Stephen King novel 😅 With the release of the book just a few weeks away guys, make sure to pre-order to be one of the first to lay your hands upon it! IF like me, you’ve never seen the point of pre-ordering a book, it turns out any potential book tour I might embark on is essentially determined by the pre-order sales! Henceforth the more books that are sold now, the more likely I’ll be appearing in a bookstore near you in the coming weeks 🍻 So if you’ve been holding out to buy, now’s as good a time as any to snap one up! For more details on what to expect inside the book and where to buy, head for the link in the BIO! 🇯🇵🍿

And so it begins. TOMORROW Natsuki and I will climb Mount Fuji! It’s the first time Natsuki has climbed a mountain ever or essentially done any form of exercise. The good news is he’s been working out on his exercise bike the last few weeks, so there may be hope yet. But we’re off to celebrate Natsuki’s 50th birthday and the release of the Abroad in Japan book next week 🥳 If any of you guys are climbing in the next couple of days, please say hi to us! Hope to see you on the summit. Will be posting photos throughout the climb and filming a video along the way! Wish us luck 🙏🍿

THE DAY HAS ARRIVED. ✅ 10 YEARS in the making. The Abroad in Japan book is now on sale for pre-order! (Amazing final cover reveal soon). HUGE thanks to Penguin for making this happen🙏 🍿LINK to book in BIO🍿 I’ve dreamt of writing down the crazy stories and experiences I’ve left out of Youtube for many years. Off screen there’ve been ups and downs, great moments and emotional ones, that I’ve never been able to share until now. Life in Japan has certainly been a rollercoaster. Release date is AUGUST 3rd. BUT if pre-orders go well, a book tour might well happen! So if you’ve ever wanted me to hop on a plane and pop up around the world, this year could be the one! Many thanks guys – here’s the official description! OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS When Englishman Chris Broad landed in a rural village in northern Japan he wondered if he’d made a huge mistake. With no knowledge of the language and zero teaching experience, was he about to be the most quickly fired English teacher in Japan’s history? Abroad in Japan charts a decade of living in a foreign land and the chaos and culture clash that came with it. Packed with hilarious and fascinating stories, this book seeks out to unravel one the world’s most complex cultures. 🌟’Chris Broad explores Japan in all its quirky glory..Endlessly fascinating!’ – Will Ferguson, author of Hokkaido Highway Blues 🌟 ‘Carves a unique path across Japan bringing him into contact with far too many cats, heartening renewal in Tohoku, and even pizza with Ken Watanabe.’ – Iain Maloney, author of The Only Gaijin in the Village 🌟’Fascinating, fact-packed and very funny..An excellent and enjoyable read for the Japan-curious. I loved it and learned a lot.’ – Sam Baldwin, author of For Fukui’s Sake: Two years in rural Japan

Goodbye Abroad in Japan studio. And farewell Sendai. An amazing city I feel lucky to have called home the last half decade 🙏 Fear not though – the studio WILL return. Bigger, better and with even more delicious plastic ramen.
MOUNT FUJI SUMMIT!!! 3,776m at 5am 🍿🥳⛩️🙏
Less than a week away until the release of the Abroad in Japan book (Aug 3rd). Finding myself weirdly anxious about it all. I won’t lie, it feels utterly surreal stuffing 10 years of your life into a 300 page book. It’s far more personal than the YouTube channel, with a heavy focus on those three initial crazy years spent living in rural Yamagata, working at the largest high school in north Japan. For all the many things I’ve been incredibly lucky to do here, those 3 years were an absolute whirlwind that I’ll never forget. Time spent unraveling Japan, the language, the people, the food (often too much food). Frequently culture shocked and baffled by daily life. Writing the book was the closest thing I’ve had to re-living that time, the friendships, the highs, the lows and sometimes, the tragedies along the way. For that alone – to essentially be able to go back in time – over the many months spent writing this, hunched over a keyboard, it was all completely worth it. Whether you want to live and work in Japan, travel here or simply discover 10 years worth of horrific, embarrassing stories from a British idiot, here’s hoping you enjoy the book! 🍻🍿 🇯🇵 Grab the Abroad in Japan book and be one of the FIRST to read it! (Link in BIO). And it turns out more PRE-ORDERS means more chances of book tours! 🙏
