Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram – “Body memory” is something that everyone who trains with their bodies is familiar with. It’s the capacity to form muscular memory for movement, such that your body just remembers to go to a certain place or position without any pointers or reminders. Sports people rely on this to respond quickly and dancers depend on this to ‘finally begin dancing’!
It’s a funny thing to point out that ‘dancing’ doesn’t really begin in any classical form that is rooted in aesthetic, until this ‘body memory’ is developed.
One can only get this memory from repetition. And not repetition of 2 or 3 times , but mindful precise repetition that is done 1000s of times.
Freedom comes later…. Immersion, thoughtful movement and practice come first.

I had a great workshop in Singapore this morning! Looking forward to some fun movement tomorrow.
