Sid Sriram Instagram – • So much of music (especially improvised music) is muscle memory. After long spans of travel, getting back into the rhythm of practice takes a specific kind of discipline. On one hand, the rediscovering of ideas after not having practiced for a bit is super exhilarating. On the other hand, there is a tiny latency period between thinking of an idea and physically executing said idea, that settles in. Working through that latency is the name of the game. You sit down without an end time in mind, and start flowing. Let the trip ups occur, move through them, rediscover your building blocks, new synapses form and you start to settle back into your flow/pocket. It all starts from curiosity, and stringing together the tiny moments of joy that come from curiosity being satiated fleetingly.
Here’s a clip from me improvising swaram patterns yesterday in free tempo in Raga Dharmavathi. When I’m getting back into practice after a break, I tend to experiment with a raga that feels like home
Alongside getting back into the flow of practicing, I’ve been trying to stay consistent w the following:
– reading at least a little every day
– writing at least a little everyday
– cooking a little every day
– making one melodic idea per day
