In the past few years I have seen my parents go as well as some of my mentors but this year I am starting to see my friends and contemporaries leaving us too. Davy Chan or “Brother Big Fly” as we called him was not only a good friend but was an inspiration to me during a really dark time early in my career. As a founding member of one of Hong Kong’s earliest metal bands Anodize, as well as a founding member of Hong Kong’s first hip-hop group Lazy Mutha Fucka, he showed that you could do things in a way without conforming or giving a shit what others thought. I always looked up to the way he handled himself in business and his art. We spent many many hours playing and working together over the years and I always loved spending time with Brother Big Fly. He had recently moved to Japan and my biggest regret now is not paying him a visit when I was there this year. I thought “There will be plenty of opportunities to see him, I’ll be back in Japan soon.” So if you are middle aged like me, make the time to spend time with the people you care about.
