Danny Robertshaw Instagram – HEARTWORM KILLS! These four friends* just arrived at The Doghouse, all suffering from heartworm disease. They never received the inexpensive monthly heartworm prevention that could have saved them from a disease that would surely kill them if left untreated. Their owner was ill, and her family surrendered her dogs to our local shelter, where Danny & Ron’s Rescue saved them together, as a family. Danny & Ron’s Rescue is currently caring for 21 dogs while they go through a 4-month treatment program for heartworm. One month of doxycycline, followed by 3 painful injections, all while enduring strict crate rest for 4 months, with only hand-walking for exercise. Recovery is tough on the dogs and exhausting for our staff, but we do not give up on these precious pups! In addition to the specific veterinary fees for heartworm treatment, there are expenses for routine vaccinations, dental, deworming, microchipping, exceptional dog food and nutrition, and grooming. Plus, extra staff to care for and leash-walk 21 dogs at least 3 times daily for 4 months! You can see how the overall expense to care for EACH dog nears $3,500. You can then understand why most rescues avoid taking on the added expense of heartworm treatment and the months it takes to complete the process.
