John Green Instagram – In Sierra Leone, I met with these four tuberculosis survivors—all of whom were cured because @pihsierraleone went to extraordinary lengths to get them the best drugs, including bedaquiline. Hundreds of thousands of people will die this year because they can’t afford or access bedaquiline, and with the 20-year patent expiring next week, generic versions should be fueling increased access. But in many poor countries, including Sierra Leone, @jnj is trying to evergreen the patent, extending their monopoly a further four years. In those years, six MILLION people who need access to this drug will be unable to get it, leading to an increase in drug resistant tuberculosis and hundreds of thousands of needless deaths. Tuberculosis is curable and it’s high time for Johnson and Johnson to allow the cure to become available to the millions who can’t afford it. @jnj only thinks they can get away with this because the world isn’t watching but WE ARE WATCHING.
