Bella ciao” “Goodbye beautiful” is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the mondina workers in protest against the harsh working conditions in the paddy fields of Northern Italy.
The song was soon adopted as the anthem of Italy’s partigiani and today is sung worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance.
This was forbidden to sing, you were frowned upon if you did…and I got to sing it freely and loudly in Portland, Oregon and the audience clapped and sang along loud and proud. This was our 3 minute 30 second resistance in the concert! So many feelings were experienced in just those 3 mins 30 seconds…Sometimes that’s what it takes to connect….
