Dia Mirza Instagram – If you have already made the switch from #Plastic toothbrushes to #BambooToothbrushes and are wondering how else you can help #BeatPlasticPollution, here is another way you can help 💙🌏🕊️
Humanity is addicted to plastic. We produce around 430 million tonnes of plastic annually, two-thirds of which are short-lived products which soon become waste.
• Our unsustainable production, consumption, and disposal habits compound these problems. Plastic is cheap and easy to produce. Every year 19-23 million tonnes are dumped into aquatic ecosystems.
• Recycling on its own is not working. Less than 10 per cent of plastic ever produced is recycled. The rest is buried, burnt, or dumped, usually after just a single use.
• Annually, about 4 million tonnes of plastic waste is exported from high-income countries to low- and middle- income countries, which have limited infrastructure to manage the waste in an environmentally sound manner.
• Plastic contributes to climate change. About 98 per cent of plastic products are produced from virgin fossil fuels, and plastics generate over 3 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.
• Plastic pollution is becoming a global health risk. Scientific literature links chemicals in plastic and damage to human health at every stage of the plastic life cycle, including workers and communities that live next door to plastic production and waste disposal sites.
Each time we refuse #SingleUsePlastics we stop the polluting cycle of hazardous plastic waste. Each of us needs to become a part of the #SolutionForPlasticPollution.
Join me and millions of others #ForPeopleForPlanet #ForNature for #CleanSeas and let’s achieve the #SDGs and #ActOnClimate 🙌🏼
